State tax changes for 2026
Last verified 2026-11-02 · Sources: this site's own rate data (data/tax_year/2026, checked 2026-10-30) · Report an error
One row per state this site has a verified 2026 data file for, generated from that file at build time. If the data does not record a change, this page does not claim one.
This is not a news round-up. Each row below is read out of data/tax_year/2026/, the same file the calculator applies, and each link is the official document that was already stored with the figures - no source was researched for this page. A state whose data file stores no document URL would appear without a link rather than with an invented one.
| State | 2026 figure | What the rule says | Change recorded in the data | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Texas | No state income tax on wages | The state levies no income tax on wages, so the calculator prints an explicit zero line instead of omitting the row. | No prior-year figure is stored for this state, so no change is claimed here. | Texas Comptroller |
| Washington | No income tax on wages | Paid Family & Medical Leave premium 1.13% in 2026, employee share 71.43%; WA Cares 0.58%, employee only. | The stored ESD release is titled as the premium rising to 1.13% for 2026; the employee share is the split this site verifies against that release. | ESD news release |
| Michigan | 4.25% flat | Withholding annualises, subtracts $5,900 per exemption, applies the flat rate and divides by the pay dates. | The personal exemption is $5,900 for 2026; the data note records $5,800 for 2025 and $5,600 for 2024, which is why the figure is re-read every year rather than carried forward. | Michigan Department of Treasury |
| Florida | No state income tax on wages | The stored source is the state constitution, Article VII, Section 5. The calculator prints an explicit zero line instead of omitting the row. | No prior-year figure is stored for this state, so no change is claimed here. | Florida Constitution, Article VII, Section 5 |
| Illinois | 4.95% flat | IL-700-T allowances are $2,925 and $1,000 a year; the published tables are bucketed by wage range, so a table lookup and the stated formula can differ by a few cents. | No prior-year figure is stored for this state, so no change is claimed here. | Illinois Department of Revenue |
| Pennsylvania | 3.07% flat | Local earned income tax is user-supplied rather than looked up, because the rate is set per municipality; the state rate itself is flat. | No prior-year figure is stored for this state, so no change is claimed here. | Pennsylvania Department of Revenue |
| Georgia | 4.99% | Withholding subtracts the Table E standard deduction and any dependent allowance for the pay period, then applies the rate. Georgia's calculator page is built but not live: its 2026 figures are verified, and publication rather than calculation is what is missing. | No prior-year figure is stored for this state, so no change is claimed here. | Georgia DOR |
| California | Progressive withholding, Method B | Withholding uses the EDD DE 44 Method B exact calculation rather than a flat rate. SDI is 1.3% with no wage cap. | SDI is 1.3% for 2026. The data note records that the EDD web page has already moved on to the following year's rate, so the figure here comes from the DE 3395 PDF for the current year. | California EDD |
| New York | Progressive withholding, Method II | Withholding uses NYS-50-T-NYS Method II. New York publishes single and married withholding schedules only, so head of household is not offered as a state status. | No prior-year figure is stored for this state, so no change is claimed here. | New York State |
Where a row says no prior-year figure is stored, the data file holds only the 2026 value, so this page cannot honestly describe a change and does not. This page covers the 2026 tax year only; no later-year figure appears on it.
How to read the figure column
"Flat" means the rate applies to the wages on the check. States marked progressive use their own withholding method, which is why the figure column names the method instead of a percentage: a progressive state cannot be summarised by one number without misleading somebody.
What is not on this page
No state law changes are described, no effective dates are inferred, and no pending legislation is listed. Those are claims about the future; this page only records what withholding documents said at the date recorded in the methodology's source table. The methodology names the source behind each figure and the date it was checked; each state page lists the full set of documents it uses.
